Dr Who Fan Edits List

WHOFLIX is the original Doctor Who Fan Edits site.

This is where fan editing of the BBC TV series Doctor Who began. So far a total of 226 fan edits of the 281 stories from William Hartnell to Peter Capaldi have been completed by that mysterious Fan Editor in Time and Space known only as Whopix. His first fan edit, of The Five Doctors, was made on VHS in 1997, pre-dating The Phantom Edit.

If you include Non-Who Edits, The Sarah Jane Adventures, the Peter Cushing Dalek Movies, audiobook & soundtrack versions, the orphan episodes and all those stories that have been edited more than once, Whopix has actually completed 290 fan edits. As far as he can tell that makes him the most experienced fan editor on the planet!

Whoflix is the first and, so far, only DW fan edit site where you can watch and listen to new versions of everything from An Unearthly Child all the way to New Earth. Chronologically, the final fan edit of the project is Twice Upon A Time.

  1. So maybe you get asked this all the time.
Do you think you’ll ever give the Peter Cushing movies a crack?
I hear a remastered bluray is coming along in time for the 50th anniversary…

    • Actually Mickey, nobody has ever asked me that before and I`ve honestly never thought about it.

But now that you`ve mentioned it…hmmm…

Just off the top of my head, I reckon the first film – the Roy Castle one – would lose more material than the second – Bernard Cribbins – one. For obvious reasons…

Leave it with me and I`ll have a think about it!

And yeah, both movies are coming out on Blu-ray in the near future

  2. So, any chance of seeing the end of time fan edit ever seeing an upload? the name of the doctor would also be great, perhaps with clara superimposed on to more old footage

    • I`m saving The End of Time for your Anniversary Christmas Present, Oscar – be patient!
The Name of The Doctor is done, the Edits for the latest run will go up before November.

      • Okay thanks, i look forward to them. Just Watched your Asylum of the daleks and was very impressed!

      • Yay! Thanks, Oscar. Much appreciated.
Hopefully you`ll like what I`ve done with the recent run of S7.2 eps too!

    • oh yes, but my plan was to upload Matt’s final run of stories just before Capaldi starts in the autumn. No reason why they couldn’t go up earlier though if people are desperate to see `em!

  3. From what’s left (and exists in visual format!) there doesn’t seem to be many Classic fanedits to do!

    • no, there’s not. only 24 to go on video! Am currently uploading the “backlog” of all the ones I did over Xmas/New Year so that we’re all up to date. Expect quite a few releases over the next few weeks!

  4. I hope my questions are not getting too annoying, are you going to do Six’s “Real Time”? I wouldn’t be surprised if you wouldn’t since 1. It has a cliff-hanger ending that hasn’t been solved to this day. 2. Many people don’t consider it to be good 3. You don’t have it listed after “Terror of the Vervoids”. However, it is the only official episode that isn’t audio-only where Evelyn is a companion. That has to count for something.

    • To be honest, I hadn’t really thought about it. I suppose I could, given that I did Shalka.
      It’s a possibility…

  5. All of the Fan Edits from Hide onwards (except The Day of the Doctor and The Magician’s Apprentice ) are still linked to OBOOM.
    Can’t wait to view these

    • all those files have now been uploaded.
if you spot any others that I’ve missed please let me know.
      hope you enjoy the edits!

      • Thanks .I have started with Cold War .Do you find it harder to edit the new series than the old classic ones ? The Classics were at a slow pace and needed speeding up but the Newbies are positively frenetic .

      • The idea behind Whoflix was to fan edit the Classic Series to bring it more in line with the New iteration. At its simplest:
from any 25m CS episode, on average, there’s only about 10m where the story is moving forward.
by contrast, with any NS episode, on average there’s only 10m where the story isn’t moving forward!

In the early days of Whoflix NS edits were a real pain as I only had the vanilla releases, which were in stereo. I held off buying the box sets as, for the price, I didn’t feel the extras justified it. It was only later that I discovered how to extract each audio file from the 5:1 sound mix. That makes NS edits a heck of a lot easier!

And with the Classic Series completed, and no new New Who until Xmas, I have plans to do some more if I can find the time once Uni has calmed down.

  6. I have just downloaded “The Stolen Earth” Fan Edit . The quality of the picture is pretty dreadful (only a little file)
Any chance of getting a better copy ?

  7. I’ve just recently come across your site. I transferred ‘The Auton Invasion’ to DVD and was amazed at the quality of your edit. I picked ‘The Robots of Death’ next but have found the picture to lose clarity quite badly during long spells, especially noticeable when the action is quick moving. I’ve checked the divx file on my computer and it shows the same faults. Is this something that you are aware of? Regards Brian

    • Can’t say that I am. I had a quick look and it looks fine to me. Perhaps your definition of “loses clarity” is different to mine!

  8. Love to see you take a crack at the animated POWER OF THE DALEKS – It cries out for a fan edit! Your work is Fab! 🙂

    • Cheers Herb, glad you’re enjoying the edits.

As for Power of the Daleks, work on that one is almost complete…

  9. The DVD covers you have made for this site where do you get the artwork from. Because I can identify at least 20 covers which I commissioned an artist to make and having spoken to him know you did not have his permission to use.

    • All the images used are freely available on the internet, which is where I got them from, and in every instance the artist of the original is credited. They are covered by Fair Use since they are in the public domain.

    • hmmm…. can’t say it’s something that’s really been on my radar, but it is a question that pops up every now and again. If enough people wanted it, then maybe one day. Which ones would you like to hear in an edited version?

  10. Have you re-done anything since your work on Power? I think the “latest” page has disappeared and it was a useful tool to see what you’ve been up to.

    • No Revisitations planned as yet, though I am looking back at some of my earlier New Series edits. Most of these were completed from either the TX version or the early vanillas which were only Stereo. Since then I’ve learned how to extract the 5.1 audio, which gives you a lot more flexibility in the editing since the music is – mostly – on it’s own channel.

I think I did have a Production History page at one time, but when I revamped the site to its present format, with the front page having images of each edit in order, it became a bit redundant. I suppose I could put up a sticky post of “Whoflix News” if peeps were interested…

  11. Have you thought about doing K-9 and Company, Death Comes to Time, Real Time, Dreamland, the Infinite Quest or any of the mini-episodes?

Oh did you know McGann Shada is missing from the 8th Doctor’s section? Admittedly it is a animated (kind of) story rather than a TV story and may be a little confusing to have two Shadas listed but even so.

Also might I recommend a sort of ‘unbound’ section where you have Scream of the Shalka and the Dalek Movies?

  13. That’s so funny — I was just coming to this page to ask the same thing as the Shadow Man! I’m glad you reinstated the “Other Edits” page to make those easier to find.

My wife and I continue to have a great time as we go through the series in “universe chronological” order, meaning we started with Event One in “Castrovalva” and are working our way towards Orson’s ship in “Listen.” (For episodes with an unknown date, we simply slot them in broadcast order.) Your edits are helping us enjoy the trip immensely!

One of the real standouts was “The Green Death.” I know it’s considered a classic, but we had tried to watch it back when it was on Neftlix and found it too dull when dragged out over 6 parts. Your edit was much better paced, and (I think) helped us to see what others have seen in the storyline all along.

Let me also add my voice to those who say that if you ever want to take a crack at any of the Reeltime offerings such as “Downtime” (especially now that they’re finally showing up on DVD), I’d love to see those as well. For that matter, even though I can’t stand “Torchwood” and I found “K9” (the 2010 series) to be rather dull, I would probably watch those if you did an edit of them as well! 🙂

Take care and keep up the great work!

  14. I’m curious, are you going to redo Shada as an edit when the HD animated/live action version with Tom Baker? I know you already did it and it’s a great version, but I’m just curious to see what you could do with the Tom Baker version.

    • Yes I am. It’ll be interesting to see how much the whole thing can get cut down, which I suspect will be quite a lot!

“The Sphere of Skagra” will remain an alternate take on the story in the Other Edits section.

    • Whoops! That’s what happens when you update the edit and redo the page but forget to update the link! D’oh!

Fixed. Thanks for letting me know!

    • I have thought about it, but I’m not convinced that the pain would be worth the gain. Doing the telecomics over at Whopix has given me an idea of just how much work would be involved, and it would be a lot – especially for something like The Myth Makers! I always find that the problem with telesnap recons is that you spend half your time trying to work out which other story they’ve screen grabbed the Doctor from, like Britbox mocking up the opening of The Wheel In Space using the start of The Mind Robber.

And then there’s the fact that Loose Cannon have already done them all…

I prefer doing the telecomic versions if I’m honest, but I’m not totally against the idea. Personally I like the idea of some sort of Motion Comic instead of static slides, but if enough people wanted to see Whoflix do fan edit recons then I’d certainly consider it. But only after I’ve finished the remaining edits for Tennant, Smiffy & Capaldi.

    • In terms of format & duration yes, and rather successfully even if I do say so myself!

      • On that we agree. Your edits are very good.

That said, I do strongly prefer the original series as it was for the most part.

      • Which is fine, the point of the exercise is to produce a “better” version, the one that the Editor wants to see. Not everyone prefers a cut down compilation version, like Dame Levine for exqample, but that’s ok.

    • Nah, I’ve got them all on DVD. Why would I? It’s only really aimed at peeps who’ve never seen them before. And now that everything since 2005 is back on the iPlayer, it’s the perfect time to introduce the Not We to the show.

    • No. For one thing the edits are spread out over multiple MEGA’s, and even if I knew how to combine them all into one Zip File, which I don’t, it would be so big it would probably take days to download!
Just download them one at a time. After all, you can only watch them one at a time!
